Sidmouth, East Devon, Aug Bank Holiday 2019. The Falcons are the UK’s premier military parachute display team, based at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, they display at venues all over Britain and Europe throughout the year. They have performed many times for the Royal Family and heads of state and set records and introduced many exciting innovations into formation skydiving. The team met the veteran and no doubt talked about the need for precision planning.
When The Tide Came In
Thousands gathered in Sidmouth's summer sun
Perched on rocks, shoreline, promenade
for air display to run
Necks craned searching skies for Falcons military parachutes to
appear
And land on beach to salute an aged veteran, time was drawing near.
Waiting, waiting for act one to run its course
The sky was empty, save seagulls back and forth
Soon a biplane swooped and soared, spitfire graced the stage and
jet masters roared
At last a chinook danced to delight, a ballerina dressed to fight.
But what about our veteran now
His D day passing before our eyes
For there was no precision presence coming from the skies.
A little matter a planning oversight
The tide had come in and no landing beach in sight.
