Appointment

Lycra to skin, oil to chain

Pedal to cleat, ready to strain

Full steam ahead on the old railway track

Bath to Bristol- there and back

Crossings, cuttings, stations past

Tunnels, bridges closing fast

Fast to the appointed time

When suddenly across the line

A canine dashed and struck the wheel

A new appointment now revealed

Reflecting on a helmet broken

Bruised, battered pride awoken

Why that hound came out just then

Is only known to God not men

For in his care and destiny

Prevent a greater calamity?
